WHAT IS ACCREDITATION
The Land Trust Alliance is a national land trust conservation organization that represents more than 1,000 member land trusts and their 4.6 million supporters The Alliance is the voice of the land trust community and is the national leader in policy, standards, education, and training for member land trusts. The Alliance through its Land Trust Accreditation Commission oversees the accreditation program for member land trusts.
Accreditation is a mark of distinction for a land trust and shows that the land trust meets high standards for land conservation. It sends a message to knowledgeable landowners and supporters that the land trust is a strong, effective organization that can be trusted to conserve and protect land forever. Accredited land trusts hold more than 75% of all land and easements held by land trusts in North America.
Accreditation is a catalyst for improvement in a land trust and can be a long and arduous process. To be accredited a land trust must successfully implement the Land Trust Standards and Practices. Accreditation gives donors and the conservation community confidence that the land trust is an effective, well-run organization, that it has a well thought out conservation vision, and that it has strong policies and procedures to carry out that conservation vision. The accreditation seal shows that a land trust can keep the promise of perpetuity and that it is worthy of the public trust.
MCT is proud to be an accredited land trust. It was originally granted accreditation in 2014 and was reaccredited in 2019.
